Blackout curtains solve the issue of having three large windows that had to stay.

The Digital Picture designed this room for a client who has two pretty specific uses for it: The front row of seating is specifically designed to deliver impactful movie viewing, with an excellent image and terrific sound. The rear row of seating is made for watching sports — or putting on some music and playing cards or chess. However, the movie watching experience is still excellent in the top “stadium-view” seats as the immersive sound system has a field that include that rear row.

Speakers in this room are mix of active (powered) and passive arrays, the latter being used in what’s called the “height” channels — the sound that’s overhead in an immersive system. The screen is large, with an aspect ratio of 16:9, and a BenQ projector provides the image.

The room’s layout requires that the equipment racks be located in the room’s front cabinets. These racks have to be properly cooled (expensive electronic such as these demand proper ventilation to ensure a long working life), and the limited space meant that The Digital Picture had to create two small-than-usual rack units that can roll out of their cabinetry and rotate for maintenance.

Additionally, the crew at The Digital Picture tells us that “due to local building regulations and the architectural design of the home, the cinema has three large external windows which could not be moved or removed from the design. In order to eliminate any ambient light we sourced a local window coverings supplier to install a complete blackout blind solution in a track system inside each window frame.” The controls of the cinema mirror the other controls in the home for a consistent user interface.
